Between Algeria and Japan, commonly exposed to recurring earthquakes, a tradition of mutual assistance and solidarity does exist and has been reaffirmed every time catastrophe struck one of the two countries.
In the letter of condolence and sympathy addressed on March 13, 2011 to His Excellency Mr. Naoto Kan, the Prime Minister of Japan, the President Abdelaziz Bouteflika expressed in that spirit Algeria‘s full readiness to extend every aid and assistance in this painful moment.
Therefore, in order to contribute to the efforts currently made to relieve the consequences of the catastrophe of last March 11, Algeria has decided to donate 10 million US dollars.
This amount has been transferred to the bank account of the Japanese Red Cross Society, on April 1, 2011.
